Over the past year, Sega has been transitioning away from the standard box product model, instead opting to make the most of their back catalogue through digital distribution.

Sega Japan has launched the website Archives Sega to catalogue all of the games that have been released digitally, from the SEGA AGES Online service through to the new Model 2 collection.

There are currently no plans to replicate the website in English.

Check out Maldita Castilla, a homage to arcade platformers

by on Dec.13, 2012, under News

Spanish independent developer Locomalito has released a new game called Maldita Castilla, which is his ode to the arcade platformers of old, such as Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts, Black Tiger and Karnov.

The game mixes the platforming action of the aforementioned games with European mythology and draws inspiration from the landmark novel Amadis de Gaula, one of the most influential series in literary history.

You can download the game here. It’s free, but you get a few extras if you donate to the author.

Emulator and ROMs for unreleased Konix Multisystem console now available

by on Dec.11, 2012, under News

The Konix Multisystem was an ambitious British made console originally intended to go on sale in 1989, but never eventuated following years of delays and the death of its parent company. The 16-bit 8086 driven system essentially acted as a dashboard with a variety of peripherals (steering wheels, joysticks etc.) available. Unfortunately the combination of the company’s ambition to use floppy disks and media combined with the system’s low RAM doomed it in the eyes of most developers.

For many years, the only way you get could a taste for what the system was like was through some old VHS footage of the games. However now through the hard work of a programmer called Savoury Snax, Phil Bennett, Slipstream – the Konix Multisystem archive and legendary British programmer Jeff Minter, a Konix Multisystem emulator is now available.

Currently Slipstream has source code for two games: Robocod and Attack of the Mutant Camels 1989. Although the games are from different eras of the Konix Multisystem hardware (as it changed a lot in development), the fact that they are playable at all is simply amazing.

Officially sanctioned Street Fighter X Mega Man fangame to celebrate both series’ 25th anniversaries

by on Dec.11, 2012, under News

Capcom has announced that they have approved the release of a fan made Mega Man and Street Fighter crossover game in celebration of each series’ 25th anniversary. The game will be released on December 17, drawing the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary celebrations to a close, and kicking off the Mega Man series 25th Anniversary celebrations. Yes, Capcom has actually decided to do something for Mega Man’s anniversary.

As you can see from the trailer, the game essentially plays like your bog standard Mega Man game, but replaces the usual robot masters with eight of the finest fighters from the Street Fighter series.

Capcom’s Christian Svensson says they have more planned for the Mega Man anniversary, and that celebrations will take place over the course of the next year. On a post on Capcom Unity, he stated “I don’t know that there’s more substantial [things] for me to talk about but there’s a TON more things we have in the works, only some of which will be shared on December 17th.”

At this stage, the only other known Mega Man anniversary plans are the Virtual Console releases of Mega Man and Mega Man 2 for the 3DS in Europe in Q1 2013. Get to it, Capcom!

Eurocom shutting down

by on Dec.09, 2012, under News

The BBC is reporting that long-serving work for hire developer Eurocom Entertainment Software will be shutting its doors after 24 years.

Eurocom is best remembered for their high quality ports during the fifth generation era such as the Mortal Kombat series, Duke Nukem 64 and Hydro Thunder.

They also spearheaded the Wii-based reimagining of GoldenEye, which was a big success in 2010. However, it seems Bond did them in in the end, with the recently released 007 Legends lack of success being a major contributor to the studio’s fate.

Take a look at Ruffian’s Streets of Rage prototype

by on Dec.06, 2012, under News

Ruffian Games, developers of Crackdown 2 for the Xbox 360, made the above prototype video as a pitch for a potential downloadable Streets of Rage sequel.

The video is obviously very rough (“pre pre pre Alpha according to the studio), but shows a bit of promise. Perhaps one day Sega will get off the pot and do something new with Streets of Rage.
