Ys Origin headed to Steam at the end of May

by on May.25, 2012, under News

Ys Origin, the seventh game in the Ys series, is set for a May 31 release on Steam.

Ys Origin is a prequel, and is thus the first Ys game in chronological terms. Set 700 years before Ys I & II, Ys Origin explores the back story of Ys through three playable characters (each with their own story) who might sound a tad familiar to fans with a good memory of the original titles.

Originally released in 2006 for Windows, Ys Origin will finally be released outside of Japan thanks to publisher XSEED Games and their localization efforts. The Steam version boasts widescreen and enhanced game pad support, online leaderboards, and additional game modes (available upon completion).

Ys Origin will set you (and me!) back $US19.99/€15.99/£12.99.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land and Monster World IV hit the Wii Virtual Console

by on May.10, 2012, under News

Two more titles from the classic Wonder Boy series, Wonder Boy in Monster Land and Monster World IV (pictured), are launching on the Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Console service on May 10.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land is an action role-playing platformer developed by Westone and released for many systems including the Sega Master System , Amiga, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, and Atari ST. In Wonder Boy in Monster Land players reprise their role as Wonder Boy (now in a Medieval world) to rid the land of a fire-breathing dragon and his minions. The Sega Master System version of Wonder Boy in Monster Land was released on Virtual Console in 2009, however, it is the 1987 arcade version that Wii owners will get to experience anew from tomorrow.

More exciting is the release of Monster World IV, the sixth and final installment in the Wonder Boy franchise (though technically not part of the Wonder Boy series and exclusively part of the Monster World series). Monster World IV is a 1994 adventure platformer also developed by Westone and released for the Sega Mega Drive – only in Japan. This Virtual Console release is the first official release of the game outside of Japan. Featuring a female protagonist and Middle Eastern setting, Monster World IV sees players journey to save the Elemental Spirits and defeat the bad guys.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land and Monster World IV will set you back 900 Nintendo Points each.

Rumour: Shenmue HD exists and Sega has been sitting on it for a year

by on Mar.17, 2012, under News

Online magazine Gamerzines has reported that a source close to Sega has suggested that the company has been working on HD ports of Shenmue and Shenmue II for quite some time.

Not only that, but both games are finished and Sega has been sitting on them until they have a clearer picture of the future of the Shenmue series – which probably means whether or not the company is willing to do Shenmue III.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

Sega teases Jet Set Radio for XBLA/PSN

by on Feb.25, 2012, under News

Sega has teased via their community blog that Jet Set Radio will be the next Dreamcast game to see an Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network release.

Jet Set Radio is a fan favourite from the Dreamcast era. It was one of the first games to execute cel-shading particularly well – but you can’t overlook its stellar soundtrack and fantastic game world either.

Given the quality of recent Dreamcast XBLA/PSN releases, I wouldn’t be getting my hopes up too high, but you can always grab the original game for a pittance on eBay.
