Introduction to the Sega Master System / Mark III

by on Jun.10, 2012, under Introductions

The Sega Master System might not be the instantly recognisable icon that its main competitor, the Nintendo Entertainment System is, but it served as the introduction to video games for many players in the UK, continental Europe, Australia and Brazil. Mentioning Alex Kidd (or its malapropism, “Alex the Kid”) to anyone from one of these countries is likely to illicit the same nostalgic flash as Super Mario Bros. would from an American or Japanese fan.

Master of Darkness takes a bite of the 3DS

by on May.07, 2012, under News

Master of Darkness (titled Vampire: Master of Darkness in the US), a Castlevania-style vampire hunting platformer released for the Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear in the early 90s, will be re-released on the 3DS Virtual Console.

In Master of Darkness players take up the role of Dr. Social, a psychologist armed with a wide range of weapons – including knives, rapiers, axes, pistols and bombs, and fight their way through a variety of locations to defeat many enemies and eventually Dracula himself.

A date for the 3DS release is yet to be announced.

SMS Quest: ninjabearhug vs. the entire SMS library

by on Feb.01, 2012, under News

YouTuber ninjabearhug has decided to take on a lofty goal of finishing every PAL game released on the Sega Master System (a complete guide to which I wrote like ten years ago), and will be documenting the quest with a series of videos.

There are 269 PAL releases for the system, and he’s got all of them in his possession, so we can safely assume that this will be done on the original hardware.

The first game up is The Ninja, which you can watch above.

Every system has a few great games, but the Master System has some real stinkers. So good luck, ninjabearhug!
