Angry Birds now available for Sega Mega Drive

by on Jul.19, 2012, under News

Angry Birds is basically everywhere you look nowadays, and it has even made its way to the Sega Mega Drive – well, on an emulator anyway.

The fan demake, created by a Chinese developer going by the screen name zhengyaxin_8bit, gives the super popular Angry Birds a 16-bit makeover, and overcomes the lack of a touch based control scheme with a simple press and drag on the keyboard instead.

You can download the ROM for Angry Birds on Sega Mega Drive here – it is free and available now.

Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition confirmed

by on Jul.19, 2012, under News

It was rumoured last week that a Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition was on the way, and the latest issue of Famitsu confirms this to be true.

Alongside HD visuals, the HD remake will feature improved load times, item box management in phone booths, and food you have eaten will be checked off in menus – making particular sides a tad easier! An official site has gone up with wallpapers and a comparison of the HD and PS2 versions’ screenshots.

Coming to PlayStation 3, Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition is planned for release November 1 in Japan and is priced at 5,290 yen. No news on a western release yet, but it is still very early days. Oh, and there is a trailer – check it out below.

Silent Hill HD Collection now more playable – on PS3 at least

by on Jul.17, 2012, under News

A patch for the PlayStation 3 version of the Silent Hill HD Collection has been released via PSN, addressing many of the issues plaguing the recent re-release.

As a result of unfinished versions of Silent Hill 2 and 3 being used to port across to the Xbox 360 and PS3 (Konami lost the complete source code), the Silent Hill HD Collection was released with numerous bugs and problems that left purchasers with a bad taste in their mouths. Konami announced a patch to fix these issues for both versions of the title a few months back, however it seems Xbox 360 owners are being left waiting a little longer.

Fixes included in the patch:
– Improved frame rate
– Voice synch is greatly improved
– Missing sounds have been fixed
– Missing music has been addressed
– Fog density issues are resolved
– Other minor visual/audio improvements

With the patch now available, now might be the time to revisit Silent Hill. Well, unless you are a Xbox 360 owner.

Mobile version of Pitfall! underway at Activision

by on Jul.16, 2012, under News

The newly-formed mobile division over at Activision is revisiting the old Activision classic Pitfall!

Originally released back in 1982 for the Atari 2600 (and ported to just about everything else 8-bit), Pitfall! was a big success – it was the second highest selling game for the Atari 2600 and is adored by fans still to this day.

“We’ve been working on Pitfall since earlier in the year when we set up and it has been really good to revisit that and bring it to a modern audience” Activision’s Martyn Brown told MCV, keen to dispel last week’s rumours that a Call of Duty for smartphones was underway instead. “Pitfall for smartphones is a fresh take” he continued, however no details as to what this entails have yet be provided.

Pitfall! turns 30 in September of this year – 3 months ahead of me. We are old.

Another World coming soon to Jaguar

by on Jul.16, 2012, under News

Homebrew developers The Removers have successfully ported the classic action/adventure game Another World to the Atari Jaguar, one of the few formats of the era to not get its own copy of the game.

The Jaguar version takes advantage of being late to the party by incorporating all of the enhancements from the 15th anniversary edition of the game. The project even has the blessing of Eric Chahi, the man behind the original game.

The Removers are ramping up plans to produce a physical release of the cartridge, though numbers of cartridges produced will be based on the number of responses they receive to a survery they are conducting on their website.

Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector’s Set for PS3 gets even more content

by on Jul.16, 2012, under News

The Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector’s Set is already chock full of goodies, but PlayStation 3 owners are now in for even more content. At San Diego Comic-Con, Capcom announced that the PS3 version of the set will include exclusive additional digital content.

In addition to all the content already announced, the PS3 version will come with download codes for Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors’ Dreams, Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Street Fighter Alpha 3 as PSOne Classics, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max for PSP, and the Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition DLC. You will apparently also receive 175 PSN avatars – that’s a lot of avatars!

The Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector’s Set is available for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 18 in North America for US$149.99 (you can preorder it on Amazon now). I wonder if the Xbox 360 version will get anything to compensate.

Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition might be a thing

by on Jul.15, 2012, under News

Sega Japan may have unintentionally revealed a HD re-release of Yakuza and Yakuza 2 for PlayStation 3.

Appearing on Sega’s release schedule for a short time, RyÅ« ga Gotoku 1& 2 HD Edition (Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition) was listed for a December 1 release at 5,229 yen. The now amended release schedule shows no sign of Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition, however Andriasang, who originally spotted the “announcement”, posted a link to the cached version of the original schedule which outed the title.

With Yakuza 5 set for release around the same time, December is shaping up to be a great month for series’ fans.
