Nintendo announces plans for Wii U Virtual Console

by on Jan.27, 2013, under News

WiiUVC
In January’s Nintendo Direct video conference earlier in the week, Nintendo detailed their plans for the Wii U version of the Virtual Console service.

The Virtual Console service will launch on Wii U after the Spring (our Autumn) update. Initially only games for the NES and SNES will be released, but plans were announced for the Game Boy Advance to join the line up in the future. Titles are being re-coded for the Wii U VC, with new features like save states being added.

However, the downside of that is that you’re going to have to buy the games again. Nintendo did announce a program whereby you’ll be able to get a discount on the Wii U version of a VC title if you’d bought it on the Wii – which is a better outcome than most expected. For the US, it ends up that you’ll be able to convert to the Wii U versions for $1 for NES games and $1.50 for SNES games. No word on local pricing.

In addition to being able to play on the Wii U GamePad, Wii U VC titles will support the Classic Controller and Pro Controller. Apparently VC titles will be among the first two support two Wii U GamePads.

To whet your appetite, Nintendo are releasing a game a month at a heavily discounted price. Balloon Fight is the first game up, and it’s just 30 cents. That’s cheaper than a McDonald’s cone! F-Zero will follow in February, Punch-Out!! in March, Kirby’s Adventure in April, Super Metroid in May, Mario & Yoshi in June and Donkey Kong in August.

Neo Geo X Gold Limited Edition being discontinued

by on Jan.27, 2013, under News

neo_geo_x
The Neo Geo X Gold Limited Edition is actually limited as it turns out, and if you want one, you’ll need to get in before the end of April, when the manufacturer expects the stock to be exhausted. The standard Neo Geo X Gold system will continue to be sold beyond this point.

Speaking with Eurogamer, representatives from Tommo stated “The NeoGeo X Gold System Limited Edition Collection Series that includes Ninja Masters, was always planned to be a limited edition product. We are currently manufacturing our final run of this Limited Edition Collection Series and our distributors worldwide expect to have the final stock in April. Given the popularity of the NeoGeo X format, we don’t expect this stock to last long.”

Apparently there are meant to be some announcements concerning more games and software updates for the console soon.

Metroid II fan remake playable demo now available

by on Jan.14, 2013, under News

The Metroid II remake project, AM2R, has been ongoing for what seems like eons, but fans can get their first taste of the game thanks to a demo released late last month.

AM2R attempts to marry the gameplay and visual stylings of the 2004 Metroid remake, Zero Mission, with the monochrome Game Boy only release of Metroid II: Return of Samus, giving fans the opportunity to enjoy the oft overlooked second game in the series with some more modern trimmings. Nintendo had at one stage been working on Metroid II DX for the Game Boy Color, but the project was cancelled.

No release date is planned for the final version of AM2R at this stage.

The Organ Trail: Director’s Cut now available on Windows, Mac OS

by on Jan.12, 2013, under News

organtrail
The Organ Trail is an indie game which combines the classic educational game The Oregon Trail with – you guessed it – zombies. Rather than fighting off starvation and dysentery, the game has you fighting off the undead hordes as you and your group of survivors take their station wagon across the continental United States.

The game was originally released for free as a Flash game before being expanded onto iOS and Android devices. Now the game has returned to Windows and Mac OS with even more extra content. Said extra content will be available for the phone versions as DLC for around $2.

You can buy the game here for $US4.99. The game is also currently a candidate for Steam Greenlight, so you should support it there too.
