Video Game Ad of the Day: Super Metroid
by Matt Keller on May.20, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day
In honor of Super Metroid being all of 30 cents on the WiiU Virtual Console (buy it – no excuses!), we present to you the Japanese ad for the game. It’s nice and subtle compared to the US ad, which talks about Super Metroid being difficult enough to turn you into lamb cutlets. You should all totally hunt down a Super Famicom version of Super Metroid for its superior box art. There is also a full English language option.
Metroid II fan remake playable demo now available
by Matt Keller on Jan.14, 2013, under News
The Metroid II remake project, AM2R, has been ongoing for what seems like eons, but fans can get their first taste of the game thanks to a demo released late last month.
AM2R attempts to marry the gameplay and visual stylings of the 2004 Metroid remake, Zero Mission, with the monochrome Game Boy only release of Metroid II: Return of Samus, giving fans the opportunity to enjoy the oft overlooked second game in the series with some more modern trimmings. Nintendo had at one stage been working on Metroid II DX for the Game Boy Color, but the project was cancelled.
No release date is planned for the final version of AM2R at this stage.
Video Game Ad of the Day: Super Metroid

Super Metroid is arguably one of the finest games of the 16-bit era, if not all time. It’s a massive, beautiful game with an excellent structure and superb gameplay. What sticks with me after playing it, however, is the fact it could tell a good story without getting in your face about it.
Axiom Verge looks to scratch that Metroidvania itch
by Charly on Apr.19, 2012, under News
Axiom Verge is a retro-style action-adventure game, featuring the familiar mix of side-scrolling, exploration and power-ups synonymous with classic Metroidvania-style titles.
Taking inspiration from such titles as Blaster Master, Contra, Rygar and Metroid, Axiom Verge boasts classic 2D sprite-based graphics, upgradeable weapons, and oodles of items and equipment – wrapped in a sci-fi setting.
The games first trailer (above) has just been released, and it is looking (and sounding) a treat.
Axiom Verge is set for release in 2013 for both PC and XBLIG.
Video Game Ad of the Day: Metroid Fusion
by Matt Keller on Feb.04, 2012, under Video Game Ad of the Day
Very nearly missed today’s post due to the upgrades and an afternoon spent finishing Banjo-Tooie.
Metroid Fusion is the last non-remake game in the series to be presented entirely using 2D graphics. It takes place after Super Metroid, with Samus becoming infected by a new alien lifeform and, somewhat ironically, saved by a serum derived from a Metroid, a species she was bent on destroying.
Metroid fans release 25th anniversary remix album
by Matt Keller on Aug.10, 2011, under News
Nintendo might be doing its darndest to forgot the 25th anniversary of the Metroid series, but the fans are not. In fact, a group of Metroid music fans, Shinesparkers have released a double CD album called Harmony of a Hunter in honor of the milestone.
The album is free to download, and includes the series’ trademark mix of ambient tunes and rock music, albeit remixed in a variety of styles, from technosynth to orchestral. The entire series is represented, from the original Metroid through to last year’s Metroid: Other M.
If you want a physical copy of the album, you can buy it from the group’s website for $US12.
