Video Game Ad of the Day: Game Boy Player

by on Jul.16, 2011, under Video Game Ad of the Day

Nintendo Australia didn’t advertise much in the GameCube era, but even when they did, it was positively awful. Behold.

The Game Boy Player was an attachment for your GameCube which allows you to play Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games on your television. In most countries, the GB Player is only available in black, but we got black and indigo ones here. Doesn’t make up for the rest of the incompetence of that generation.

Video Game Ad of the Day: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX

The best Zelda game? Quite possibly.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX was a launch title for the Game Boy Color. The new version features full colour and an extra dungeon. On top of that, it’s arguably the best of the 2D Zelda games, if not the best in the series. You can pick it up on the 3DS Virtual Console for a pittance. This ad is for the UK release of the game.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Final Fantasy VI Advance

Arguably the last Game Boy Advance release of significance.

Final Fantasy VI Advance was a port of the classic SNES game to the Game Boy Advance. The port was handled by Japanese workhorse TOSE. It features a couple of extras that weren’t in the SNES or PlayStation versions, including slightly revamped visuals, a new translation and a new location called the Soul Shrine, where you can fight monsters continuously. Being one of the last Game Boy Advance games, it wasn’t printed in big numbers, so you’ll have fun finding a copy.

Gonna take you for a ride!

Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes was the epitome of the Vs. series, bringing together more than 50 heroes and villains from the Marvel universe and Capcom video games. Just watch out for assholes like me who spam the hell out of Cable’s super attacks. This ad is for the US Dreamcast version, which was the first home version of the game.

The original Atari coin-op! It has a pretty awesome cabinet, too.

Star Wars was a hugely successful arcade game in 1983. It was somewhat revolutionary, with its 3D vector graphics and speech samples from the movie. It’s best played in the cockpit style cab, if you can find one.

Watch out for paper cuts.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is the second Paper Mario game. The game has some really neat paper effects, and a wicked sense of humour. It’s just a shame that Super Paper Mario wasn’t as good.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Katamari Damacy

Katamari on the swing!

Katamari Damacy is one of the weirdest games you will ever see. In spite of that, Namco ended up releasing the game outside of Japan in response to heavy demand from Internet forums. A clever advertising campaign and a budget price made the game an unexpected hit. Too bad they didn’t release it here – though we did get the sequels.

Video Game Ad of the Day: ICO

by on Jul.07, 2011, under Video Game Ad of the Day

Looking forward to the upcoming HD collection.

ICO is considered to be one of the best games on the PlayStation 2, in spite of the fact it was not particularly popular when it was released. The game was originally in development for the PSX, but was shifted to the PS2 late in development. A HD collection featuring ICO and its pseudo sequel Shadow of the Colossus is due in September. This ad is for the Australian release of the game.
