Howard Phillips’ personal Nintendo World Championships cart sells for $17K
by Matt Keller on Mar.30, 2013, under News
Howard Phillips, largely known for his role as the face of Nintendo of America in the 1980s, put together a rather unique Nintendo World Championships package for sale over the last week. The pack included the 126th Nintendo World Championships cart, Philips’ personal copy, his original all access badge, a press kit for the event and a signed certificate of authenticity.
The package was listed on eBay for $US7,500.00 and wound up selling for $17,367.00.
Phillips stated in the auction that he hoped the package would go to an enthusiast, rather than a reseller. We’ll just have to wait and see if that is the case.
Leisure Suit Larry remake out in May, casino game to follow
by Matt Keller on Mar.30, 2013, under News
The Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards remake, which was successfully funded through Kickstarter last year, will be released in the second half of May according to Replay Games CEO Paul Trowe.
Replay Games’ plans for Larry don’t stop with the remake: the company will be releasing a free to play casino game. This would be the third such time that the idea has been attempted – Leisure Suit Larry’s Casino was released in 1998, and before that there was the cancelled LarryLand project. Of course, that project is very early – a design doc hasn’t been written yet.
Following the casino game, Replay is tossing up whether to remake Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking for Love (In Several Wrong Places) or to create an all-new 8th installment in the series. Larry 2 is the only game in the series that must be played with a text parser.

Capcom’s Dungeons & Dragons brawlers to be re-released
by Matt Keller on Mar.23, 2013, under News
Capcom has announced that they will be releasing the two classic Dungeons & Dragons arcade beat ’em ups, Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara to Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, WiiU eShop and PCs in June.
The games will be released together in a pack called Chronicles of Mystara. Enhancements include the usual “HD” filters and drop-in/drop-out online multiplayer for up to four players. The pack has been developed by Iron Galaxies, who were responsible for Marvel vs. Capcom: Origins and Darkstalkers Resurrection.
Previously the only way to play these games at home was to track down the Japanese Saturn release, which could be a pricey endeavour.
Capcom, WayForward bringing DuckTales back to consoles
by Matt Keller on Mar.23, 2013, under News
Capcom and WayForward announced today that they will be producing a new DuckTales game for release on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and WiiU eShop later this year.
Entitled DuckTales Remastered, the game is heavily inspired by the pair of DuckTales games Capcom developed for the Nintendo Entertainment System in the early 1990s.
Capcom: bring back the Moon theme and we’ll forgive you for taking 20 years to do this.
PS3’s Final Fantasy X HD to include Final Fantasy X-2
by Charly on Mar.20, 2013, under News
Final Fantasy X-2, the sequel to Final Fantasy X, will be included in the Final Fantasy X HD release for the PlayStation 3.
News of the game’s inclusion comes via next week’s issue of Jump (scan below), which also indicates that PlayStation Vita versions of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 will be available separately. Further, both games are based on their respective international versions and are due for release sometime in 2013 – for Japan, anyway. (continue reading…)
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages coming to Western 3DS Virtual Console services
by Charly on Mar.19, 2013, under News
Last month, both The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages were released on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in Japan. Many were hoping that North America and PAL regions would too see such a release on their respective 3DS eShops forthwith.
The producer of The Legend of Zelda series, Eiji Aonuma, didn’t keep us waiting long. However, rather than confirming the western release via the usual means, Aonuma instead opted to make the announcement on the official The Legend of Zelda series Miiverse community – posting “Our plan is to release these two games in other territories some time before summer!
That’s some happy-making news.

Zelda Starring Zelda brings role reversal to The Legend of Zelda
by Matt Keller on Mar.17, 2013, under News
Inspired by the Pauline and Mario switcheroo in Donkey Kong by Mike Mika, animator Kenna W. and her video game programmer boyfriend decided that a similar thing could be implemented in The Legend of Zelda.
Together they produced a ROM hack they’ve dubbed Zelda Starring Zelda, with Zelda now taking over the role of the main protagonist, complete with new sprites to match.
You can read all about the development of the project and get the ROM from Kenna’s blog.
Super Mario Bros.: Peach Edition continues role reversal ROM hack trend
by Matt Keller on Mar.16, 2013, under News
Hot off the heels of Mike Mika’s Pauline hack for Donkey Kong, ROMHacking.net’s Kishi has released a similar effort for Super Mario Bros., which puts players in the shoes of Princess Peach, who has to rescue Mario from Bowser’s clutches.
While put together relatively quickly, Kishi’s hack, entitled Super Mario Bros: Peach Edition, is actually quite competent. Sprites have been redrawn too, so they’re not as ghastly as the original Peach sprite, and the animation is quite impressive for a quick project.
