by Matt Keller on Sep.30, 2012, under Video Game Ad of the Day
The Game Boy Light is a Japanese exclusive release of Nintendo’s famous handheld with a much needed backlight. The systems were reasonably popular, but the quality of the display leads to them commanding a significantly higher price than the standard Game Boy.
Video Game Ad of the Day: Kirby Super Star (Kirby’s Fun Pak)
by Matt Keller on Sep.25, 2012, under Video Game Ad of the Day
Kirby Super Star or Kirby’s Fun Pak is a compilation of eight Kirby themed games. Some of the games are mini-games (like Gourmet Race), while others are platformers in the standard Kirby mode. There’s even a remake of the original Kirby’s Dream Land in there.
Video Game Ad of the Day: Super Mario RPG
by Matt Keller on Sep.24, 2012, under Video Game Ad of the Day
Super Mario RPG was one of the most popular J-RPGs of the 16-bit era. Like many RPGs of that vintage, the game was not released in Australia or Europe, which aggravated many fans, since the game proved to not be compatible with most universal adaptors. It did eventually make it here through the Wii’s Virtual Console service.
Miyamoto: The Koopalings are not (currently) Bowser’s children
by Matt Keller on Sep.15, 2012, under News
One of video games’ greatest ongoing paternity issues has been settled. At least until Miyamoto changes his mind again.
In the latest issue of Game Informer, the magazine’s staff had the opportunity to ask Shigeru Miyamoto candid questions about the Super Mario Bros. series. One such question asked was regarding the relationship between the Koopalings and Bowser. They asked; “In Super Mario Bros. 3, the Koopalings were suppose to be Bowser’s children. But there’s also Bowser Jr. Are they all his kids, and are they all from different mothers? Is Bowser Jr. a Koopaling?”
Miyamoto’s response: “Our current story is that the seven Koopalings are not Bowser’s children. Bower’s only child is Bowser Jr. and we don’t know who the the mother is.”
First person to make an animated gif of Bowser dancing on The Maury Povich Show gets my eternal thanks.

by Matt Keller on Sep.02, 2012, under News
Want to know everything there is to know about the Punch Out!! series? Melburnian Daniel Lanciana has launched a Kickstarter campaign to create a 240 page encyclopedia on Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!!.
The book is complete – the campaign is intended to help the team raise money to get copyright clearance from Nintendo and cover the cost of printing the books – vanity publishing doesn’t come cheap!
Chipping in $US10 will get you a high quality eBook version of the guide. If you want a physical copy of the book, you’ll need to up your pledge to $US125. I’m a sucker for these high quality coffee style books, so I hope this campaign succeeds.
Retro Gaming Theatre: Lylat Wars (Nintendo 64)
by Matt Keller on Aug.26, 2012, under Retro Gaming Theatre
Lylat Wars is the PAL version of Star Fox 64, named as such due to a preexisting copyright. It’s arguably one of the best games on the Nintendo 64.
This video recording was actually taken as a test record before we sorted out what we were doing for this piece, so it’s quite a bit shorter than some of our other videos. We only ended up recording the first level and I did quite poorly.
Video Game Ad of the Day: Virtual Boy
by Matt Keller on Aug.25, 2012, under Video Game Ad of the Day
The Virtual Boy is the only major failure that Nintendo has suffered since entering the home video games market in 1977, but the system’s limited availability and boastings of VR like experience have made it a hot item among collectors.
Nintendo Power to cease publication after 24 years
by Matt Keller on Aug.22, 2012, under News
Nintendo Power was once the go-to guide for all the latest happenings on Nintendo systems for North American readers. However, a source from within Future Publishing US has revealed that it will cease publication of the magazine, which has been in production for 24 years.
Speaking with ArsTechnia, the source revealed that it was Nintendo who initiated the break up. Nintendo had handled the publishing of Nintendo Power internally until the end of 2007, until the publication was outsourced to Future. The source also suggested that Nintendo was “difficult to work with,” and was uninterested in renewing that contract, going digital or bringing the title back in-house.
No news on when that final issue will hit, though the editorial staff have suggested that something big is planned for the final issue.

by Matt Keller on Aug.01, 2012, under Video Game Ad of the Day
Pokemon Stadium 2 allows players to battle their Pokemon in full 3D – this time with Pokemon from the Gold and Silver games. It’s technically the third such game to do so – the very first Pokemon Stadium was a Japanese exclusive which featured only 40 of the initial 151 Pokemon.
