Prince of Persia 2 getting remake treatment

by on Apr.13, 2013, under News

In 2007, Ubisoft and Pune Studios teamed up to produce Prince of Persia Classic, a remake of the original Prince of Persia with the graphics and art style from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The release proved pretty popular, and Ubisoft took it to basically every platform under the sun.

Now the publisher and developer have teamed up to give Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame the same treatment. It has only been announced for smartphones and tablets at this stage, however. That’s a little concerning, given how combat heavy the sequel is – hopefully a console release isn’t too far off.

No date or price at this stage, so watch this space.

Fancy achievements in your retro games? RetroAchievements.org has you covered

by on Apr.13, 2013, under News

sonicachievementI was once an achievement whore which is why the announcement that RetroAchievements.org will be bringing modern achievement systems to classic consoles is a rather enticing bit of news.

How is this possible? RetroAchievements have produced a modified version of the Gens Mega Drive/Genesis emulator which supports achievements for a select list of games. It’ll connect to a profile you create on their website, which will track your achievements and high scores with other users.

Of course, achievement support is limited to a select list of games while the system and emulator undergo further testing. The list of currently supported games includes The Addams Family, Aero The Acrobat 2, Alex Kidd In The Enchanted Castle, Alien 3, Aladdin, Altered Beast, Batman Returns, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, Chakan: The Forever Man, Cool Spot, Desert Strike: Return To The Gulf, Earthworm Jim, Ecco The Dolphin, Fantastic Dizzy, Ghostbusters, Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes, James Pond II: Codename Robocod, Castle Of Illusion, Mighty Mighty Missile, NHLPA Hockey ’93, New Zealand Story, Sonic Spinball, Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Streets Of Rage 2, Super Hang-On, ToeJam & Earl, Vectorman and Zero Tolerance. More games are being added daily.

Their next planned project is a plugin for Project 64, the popular Nintendo 64 emulator, which will add similar functionality.

Taxman and Stealth behind Sonic the Hedgehog mobile remaster

by on Apr.13, 2013, under News

Sega announced at GDC that a remastered version of the original Sonic the Hedgehog would be making its way to Android and iOS devices. This new version of the game will replace the one that is currently available.

Previous Sonic the Hedgehog releases earned the ire of fans for being done as fast and as cheap as possible, so in order to prevent fan backlash, Sega has enlisted the help of Taxman, creator of the Retro Engine used in many Sonic fan games and the recent re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog CD, and Stealth, creator of the popular Sonic fan game Sonic Mega Mix.

Changes in the new release include widescreen support, a remapped HUD and touch screen controls.

The remastered version of Sonic the Hedgehog will hit in April for $US2.99. Those who previously purchased Sonic the Hedgehog on these devices will be upgraded to the new version free of charge.

Sega teases return of Castle of Illusion

by on Apr.13, 2013, under News

It would appear that, hot on the heels of the DuckTales remake, Sega and Disney are planning a remake of Castle of Illusion, one of Sega’s finest platformers from the early 1990s.

While no actual media for the game has been shown yet, Sega did put out the above teaser trailer, and the box art for the game has been leaked.

Expect to hear more from Sega on the project soon.

Angry Video Game Nerd game coming soon

by on Apr.13, 2013, under News

AVGN fans will be pleased to know that their favourite cussin’ caustic critic will be appearing in his own video game adventure, courtesy of a team up between Cinemassacre and ScrewAttack Games.

Entitled Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures, the game will see the titular nerd run and gun his way through ten levels of 2D retro platforming action, with heavy doses of NES game references and call backs to popular episodes of the show.

The game will be available on the PC later this year.

Howard Phillips’ personal Nintendo World Championships cart sells for $17K

by on Mar.30, 2013, under News

NWC1990
Howard Phillips, largely known for his role as the face of Nintendo of America in the 1980s, put together a rather unique Nintendo World Championships package for sale over the last week. The pack included the 126th Nintendo World Championships cart, Philips’ personal copy, his original all access badge, a press kit for the event and a signed certificate of authenticity.

The package was listed on eBay for $US7,500.00 and wound up selling for $17,367.00.

Phillips stated in the auction that he hoped the package would go to an enthusiast, rather than a reseller. We’ll just have to wait and see if that is the case.

Leisure Suit Larry remake out in May, casino game to follow

by on Mar.30, 2013, under News

leisuresuitlarryremake
The Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards remake, which was successfully funded through Kickstarter last year, will be released in the second half of May according to Replay Games CEO Paul Trowe.

Replay Games’ plans for Larry don’t stop with the remake: the company will be releasing a free to play casino game. This would be the third such time that the idea has been attempted – Leisure Suit Larry’s Casino was released in 1998, and before that there was the cancelled LarryLand project. Of course, that project is very early – a design doc hasn’t been written yet.

Following the casino game, Replay is tossing up whether to remake Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking for Love (In Several Wrong Places) or to create an all-new 8th installment in the series. Larry 2 is the only game in the series that must be played with a text parser.
