3D enhanced Sonic the Hedgehog coming to 3DS eShop
by Matt Keller on May.11, 2013, under News
Sega will be releasing a 3D version of the original Sonic the Hedgehog as part of their 3D enhanced re-release program for the Nintendo 3DS eShop.
This updated version of Sonic the Hedgehog will be boasting many enhancements such as the Sonic 2 spin dash, save states, the ability to switch between different regional versions of the game, and even choose between Model 1 and Model 2 Mega Drive sound. These enhancements are completely optional, meaning you can play the game in its vanilla form.
3D Sonic the Hedgehog will be released in Japan this week for 600 yen. Hopefully we’ll hear word of a local release soon.

Super Mario Crossover 3.0 coming soon
by Matt Keller on Apr.28, 2013, under News
Exploding Rabbit will be releasing a third version of their popular Super Mario Crossover game in the coming weeks. They recently posted a trailer for the latest incarnation, dubbed Super Mario Crossover 3.0.
The latest version will incorporate levels from Super Mario Special, an often overlooked entry in the Super Mario Bros. series which was developed by Hudson Soft for the Sharp X1 computer. Levels will also changed based on the difficulty level players select. On top of that, there are a bunch of new map and character skins to freshen things up.
Expect to see Super Mario Crossover 3.0 pop up in May or June.

Konami announces Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection
by Matt Keller on Apr.27, 2013, under News
After a couple of days of Kojima’s Twitter teasing, Konami has officially announced Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection.
The Legacy Collection is a package containing the main Metal Gear canon: Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid: Integral, Metal Gear Solid: HD Edition (Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance HD and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence HD), Metal Gear Solid 4: Trophy Edition and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD, along with a hundred page book on the series history and the Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2 digital graphic novels. The two MSX games will be based on the Subsistence updated versions, while Metal Gear Solid: Integral will be provided as a download code for redemption on PSN.
The release is only planned for Japan at this stage, where it will hit stores on July 11 at a cost of 7890 yen.
Virtual Console officially launches on Wii U
by Matt Keller on Apr.27, 2013, under News
After a surprisingly long delay and a couple of months of teasing with a trickle of cheap releases, Nintendo has finally launched the Virtual Console service on the Wii U.
Arguably the best thing about the Virtual Console service on the Wii U is the off-screen play ability through the Wii U gamepad. Also, European and Australian versions will be the 60Hz versions except where a game was previously optimised for PAL release.
There are a few downsides, however. One, only eight games are currently available: Balloon Fight (NES), Donkey Kong Jr. (NES), Excitebike (NES), Ice Climber (NES), Kirby’s Adventure (NES), Punch-Out!! (NES), F-Zero (SNES) and Super Mario World (SNES) in the US, while Europe and Australia switch out Kirby for the Japanese version of Super Picross and lose Balloon Fight – far fewer titles than were available on the Wii Virtual Console launch. Two, you’ll have to pay for games you bought on the Wii – you will get a discounted price on the conversion to make up for it. Finally, it looks like Nintendo is still planning to drip feed releases – no plans have been revealed for the previously announced Game Boy Advance support, or the rumoured GameCube support.

Former Sega employee unearths working “Pluto” prototype
by Matt Keller on Apr.18, 2013, under News
AssemblerGames forum member Super Magnetic has unveiled a prototype system that came into his possession while working at Sega.
Codenamed Pluto, the machine was essentially a remodelled Sega Saturn with an in-built NetLink adapter.
It is believed that two of these prototypes exist, but the one shown off by Super Magnetic is believed to be fully functional. Any plans to mass produce the prototype were probably killed off with the poor performance of the Saturn outside of Japan and the push to move onto a format where an internet interface would be available to the entire userbase (Dreamcast).
