Shantae coming to 3DS Virtual Console
by Charly on Jun.12, 2012, under News
The well-loved Shantae, a Game Boy Color classic, is planned for release on the Nintendo 3DS’s Virtual Console “soonâ€.
Shantae is a platformer developed by WayForward Technologies, which was released in North America in 2002. In the role of the half-genie Shantae, players journey through Sequin Land to challenge Risky Boots and his gang of pirates and thwart their evil plans. The games sequel Shantae: Risky’s Revenge was released in 2010 via DSiWare to critical acclaim – however the title was not released in Australia or New Zealand for unknown reasons.
Shantae is currently being rated by the ESRB, and upon its classification Nintendo will determine the release date for North America. There is no word on a PAL release at this stage.

Final Fantasy III headed to PSP later this year
by Charly on Jun.11, 2012, under News
A scan from next week’s issue of Jump has confirmed the rumours that Final Fantasy III is (finally) seeing a PSP release.
Final Fantasy III was originally released on the Famicom in 1990, and saw its first release outside of Japan in the form of a 2006 Nintendo DS remake which also made it’s way onto iOS and Android devices many years later.
Unlike the Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II remakes which graced the PSP, the Final Fantasy III DS remake wasn’t a mere graphical update but a complete visual overhaul featuring redesigned 3D character models. The scans (provided below) indicate that Final Fantasy III for PSP is a port of this Nintendo DS remake, and will include content from the iOS version and the option of playing with the original Famicom soundtrack.
Final Fantasy III for PSP is set for release on September 20 in Japan, and will be available in both digital and physical forms.

Revised translation patch for Jesus: Kyoufu no Bio Monster released
by Matt Keller on Jun.10, 2012, under News
A revised translation patch has been released for the Famicom version of Jesus: Kyoufu no Bio Monster (or Jesus: Tale of the Dreadful Bio Monster), a text heavy adventure/RPG that involves a mission to a space station known as J.E.S.U.S. to investigate a returned Halley’s Comet, which is headed towards Mars with some form of life inside.
The game was developed by Chunsoft, a popular Japanese developer who was responsible for many of the earlier Dragon Quest games. In fact, Dragon Quest composer Koichi Sugiyama worked on the soundtrack. Originally released in 1987 on the PC-88, MSX and FM-7, the game was brought to the Famicom in 1989. Enix released a sequel in 1989 for the PC-98 in 1989, followed by an X68000 port in 1991.
While a translation patch was released five years ago, authors Pennywise and Niahak decided to revisit the game to clean up a few things. They claim that it’s an almost entirely different experience.
You can get the patch here.

Doom 3: BFG Edition announced
by Matt Keller on Jun.02, 2012, under News
Bethesda has announced that they will be releasing an enhanced version of id Software’s 2004 hit Doom 3, entitled Doom 3: BFG Edition.
Doom 3: BFG Edition will give the game a partial makeover, giving the game’s visuals a slight spit and polish, along with adding 7 all new levels created for this version of the game. The Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil expansion pack will also be included. Of course, no Doom re-release is complete without ports of Doom and Doom II: Hell on Earth.
It will be interesting to see how this game runs on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, given that the history of idTech 4 games on those systems hasn’t exactly been rosy. We’ll find out when Doom 3: BFG edition releases later this year.
A 1991 HES Promotional Video
by Matt Keller on Jun.02, 2012, under News
Our friends over at Retrospekt posted this promotional video from Home Entertainment Suppliers (HES), showing off their line up of unlicensed NES games. The video is long and cheesy, but still worth a look.
HES games for the NES have a bit of a reputation among collectors due to their obscurity and relatively small print runs. HES mostly produced games from Taiwanese developers, but also released a bunch of Tengen games.
HES is actually one of Australia’s longest running video game companies, and still operates today as a distributor. They also run a publishing arm called Tru Blu Entertainment, which brought you the likes of Rugby League and AFL Live.
Donkey Kong record holder raises bar with new high score
by Matt Keller on Jun.02, 2012, under News
Dr. Hank Chien, the reigning Donkey Kong world record holder has made it just that little bit harder to knock him off the top by posting a new record high score of 1,110,000.
According to a recent interview with historian Patrick Scott Patterson, Chien thinks he can push the mark even further. He remarked that “This was not a killscreen game. I died two screens shy of the killscreen so my score would have been a little higher, perhaps 1.12 million points. I had a spare man going into Level 21 and was mentally preparing to sacrifice it on the last barrel board and my game was over a few minutes later. That’s how Donkey Kong rolls sometimes.”
The battle for the Donkey Kong world record between Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe was the subject of the 2008 film The King of Kong.
