Where Are They Now? The Duke Nukem 3D Team

As a part of the Duke Nukem week celebrations, we decided to look into what the people who made Duke Nukem 3D are up to know.

George Broussard: Executive Producer, Project Director, Map Design (Atomic Edition)
Still at 3D Realms. Led production on Duke Nukem Forever from 1997 until 2009, until 3D Realms ran out of money and released the development team. Presumed to be working on 3D Realms’ numerous iPhone projects.

Allen H. Blum III: Original Concept, Map Design, Assistant Director (Atomic Edition)
Now a level designer at Triptych Games, a studio started after the Duke Nukem Forever team was let go by 3D Realms. Worked on Duke Nukem Forever throughout its entire production cycle of 1997-2011.

Todd Replogle: Original Concept, Game Programming
Retired, resides in Thailand with his wife and son. Started the initial technical work on Duke Nukem Forever in 1997, but left the games industry and became a real estate mogul in Oregon.

Greg Malone: Producer
Left 3D Realms after Duke Nukem 3D wrapped up in 1996. He currently works as a strategic design consultant for Warehouse 21 at the Santa Fe Arts Centre, a non-profit organisation that provide educational and entrepreneurial opportunities for Santa Fe youth through diverse programming in the arts and technology.

Ken Silverman: Programmer – Build Engine, Tools and Network
Worked at 3D Realms until the end of 1996 providing support for Build engine projects and adding minor upgrades. Left the games industry to finish university studies at Brown University. He still continues to program, working on a number of design tools he releases for free through his website, along with volunteering at local schools to help students with programming.

Mark Dochtermann: Additional Programming
Went to start Hipnotic Software/Ritual Entertainment with a few other Duke Nukem 3D alumni. Served as Technical Director at Hipnotic/Ritual until 2000ish, leaving to take up the same role at MacPlay until 2002. He worked at EA Los Angeles on the Medal of Honor team as a Technical Director until leaving the company after the production of Medal of Honor: Airborne to take up a post at Google.

Jim Dose: Additional Programming
Also went to start Hipnotic Software/Ritual Entertainment. After production on SiN wrapped, he joined id Software to work on Quake III: Arena for the Dreamcast, the Team Arena expansion for PC and Doom 3. He left id to join Valve, where he has worked on games including Half-Life 2: Episode One and Two, Left 4 Dead 2, and Portal.

Richard “Levelord” Gray: Level Design
Also became a founding member of Hipnotic/Ritual. Worked with the company on all titles up to SiN Episodes: Emergence, when the company was consumed by MumboJumbo. In 2009, he started his own casual games studio Let it Rain Games.

Randy Pitchford: Level Design (Atomic Edition)
Worked with 3D Realms on Shadow Warrior, worked at a company called Rebel Boat Rocker, then left to form Gearbox Software with three other guys. He’s currently the President and CEO of Gearbox Software, and has just wrapped up production on Duke Nukem Forever, which his company acquired from 3D Realms in 2009, along with the Duke Nukem IP.

Keith Schuler: Level Design (Atomic Edition)
Worked at 3D Realms on Duke Nukem Forever until sometime in 2007-2008 when he joined Gearbox Software. Worked on Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway and Borderlands before going back to work on Duke Nukem Forever again.

Chuck Jones: 3D Modelling
Left 3D Realms after Duke Nukem 3D wrapped to work at Valve on the original Half-Life and several other games. He left to join Midway as a character artist, and stayed with the company until its closure. He now lives in Seattle.

Stephen Hornback: Artwork
Worked with 3D Realms until 2000 when he joined Ritual Entertainment. He worked with Ritual until they were acquired, then started working from home as a freelance artist. He recently joined Soldak Entertainment and worked on the RPG Din’s Curse.

Dirk Jones: Artwork
Left 3D Realms after Duke Nukem 3D to join Rebel Boat Rocker. When that company folded, he joined n-Space, where he ended up working with Duke Nukem again on Land of the Babes. He left n-Space in 2003 and began work with Pi Studios, contributing to games such as Call of Duty 3 and Rock Band.

James Storey: Artwork
Another who left 3D Realms for Rebel Boat Rocker. Worked with Runecraft Ltd on Mat Hoffman’s Pro BMX, Spec Ops: Covert Assault, Monopoly Party and others.

Brian Martel: Artwork
Left 3D Realms after Shadow Warrior for Rebel Boat Rocker. When the company folded, he founded Gearbox Software with Randy Pitchford and others. He is the company’s Art Director.

David Demaret: Additional Artwork
After Duke 3D, he worked on Prey before the project was canned. He has worked for many companies since, including Psygnosis, Sega, Ritual and Ubi Soft. He also worked on Superman 64, which he calls “the worst game ever”.

Douglas R. Wood: Additional Artwork
Worked on Shadow Warrior and Prey after Duke 3D. Packed up and moved to Washington to work with Valve, where he worked on scripted events for the original Half-Life. He still works for Valve.

Lee Jackson: Music and Sound Effects
Worked for 3D Realms as their Sound Director until 2002. He was the first video game composer to earn entry to NARAS based solely on his video game work. He currently works as a radio presenter and producer for Metro Networks in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area.

Bobby Prince: Music and Sound Effects
Composed music for a couple of other 3DR/Apogee products like Balls of Steel. Still works as a freelance composer.

Jon St. John: Voice Talent
Continues to work as a voice actor. He has reprised the role of Duke Nukem in every version of the game that requires his voice. He’s also the voice of Big the Cat in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He also runs the production company Jon St. John Productions, which provides voice over work and recording services to a variety of media.

Lani Minella: Voice Talent
She is now a hugely prolific voice actor in the video game industry, providing voices for over 500 games including Ivy in the Soulcalibur series, Rouge the Bat in the Sonic the Hedgehog series and four of the Koopa Kids in New Super Mario Bros Wii.

Robert M. Atkins: Graphic Design
Left 3D Realms after Duke Nukem 3D to found Hipnotic/Ritual. Served as the Art and Creative Director on all of Ritual’s projects, and stayed on after the company was acquired by MumboJumbo. Now serves as an Art Director at MumboJumbo.

Michael Hadwin: Graphic Design
Another of the Hipnotic/Ritual co-founders. Left the company in 2003 to start up SkyZone Entertainment, who published several mobile games based on 3D Realms properties. He sold the company to Korean technology companies several years ago.
