Video Game Ad of the Day: Banjo-Kazooie
by Matt Keller on Jan.13, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day
Banjo-Kazooie is one of Rare’s finest platforming efforts, sadly oft overlooked nowadays because of its collection based progress mechanics. The UK ad pays homage to the promotional campaign for the 1978 Superman film.
Video Game Ad of the Day: Cliffhanger
by Matt Keller on Jan.12, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day
Cliffhanger is another ghastly Sony Imagesoft published effort, this time based on the 1993 action movie starring Sylvester Stallone as a mountain climbing rescue ranger or something along those lines.
Video Game Ad of the Day: Last Action Hero
by Matt Keller on Jan.11, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day
The film Last Action Hero is, in my opinion, an unfairly derided satire of the action movie genre. A game based on the concept could have been a lot more interesting than what we got, but the project was, to my understanding, thrown together on a ridiculously short schedule and ended up being godawful as a result. You can read a pretty good article about that here.

by Matt Keller on Jan.10, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day

Abhorrent licensed platformer from Acclaim subsidiary Flying Edge based around a moderately successful toy line. The toys were actually pretty good, but the game is a stinker!

I thought I had seen all of the advertisements for Earthworm Jim, but it seems one had eluded me. It’s kind of cruel that I laughed at it though.

by Matt Keller on Jan.05, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day
Ayrton Senna’s Super Monaco GP II is an upgrade of the home version of Super Monaco GP with the added endorsement of legendary Brazilian F1 driver Ayrton Senna. The Senna GP mode replaces the original Monaco GP mode, but has you racing on that track, in addition to a few tracks designed by Senna himself.

Donkey Kong for the Game Boy, known to most as Donkey Kong ’94, is one of the finest games on Nintendo’s old handheld. It starts out as an adaptation of the original 1981 arcade game – but when you defeat DK at the end of the arcade game’s original final level, the sneaky ape gets up and steal’s Pauline again, and Mario has to chase him through another 40 odd levels of platforming fun.

by Matt Keller on Jan.03, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day
The Actua series of sports games was a short lived attempt to cash in on the jump to new hardware by Gremlin, and get in first with a variety of sports games using 3D graphics. The name is a play off Sega’s much more successful Virtua line of games. Actua Soccer was the only successful entry, but the series was dead by the time the PS2 launched.
