Rare Watara Supervision game Journey to the West found
by Matt Keller on Aug.01, 2011, under News
The Watara Supervision was a handheld system positioned to compete with the Game Boy, but failed to gain any traction with the market. While mostly viewed as an Asian obscurity, the system did actually see limited distribution in the UK and Europe.
It turns out that a action RPG – Journey to the West – was developed for the system. Digital Press user “the invincible” spied the game for sale on a British auction site, nabbed it and shared the above video for all to see.
As the title suggests, the game is based on the classical Chinese novel. It’s a relatively weird looking sidescroller, but looks to have quite a bit of detail for a handheld game. The gameplay is said to have a lot in common with Faxanadu and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, leading to some mislabelling it as a traditional J-RPG. It’s the only 512KB ROM on the Supervision – substantially larger than most games on the system, which came in at 64KB.
Apparently the game only works on the Magnum Supervision.
