Officially sanctioned Street Fighter X Mega Man fangame to celebrate both series’ 25th anniversaries

by on Dec.11, 2012, under News

Capcom has announced that they have approved the release of a fan made Mega Man and Street Fighter crossover game in celebration of each series’ 25th anniversary. The game will be released on December 17, drawing the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary celebrations to a close, and kicking off the Mega Man series 25th Anniversary celebrations. Yes, Capcom has actually decided to do something for Mega Man’s anniversary.

As you can see from the trailer, the game essentially plays like your bog standard Mega Man game, but replaces the usual robot masters with eight of the finest fighters from the Street Fighter series.

Capcom’s Christian Svensson says they have more planned for the Mega Man anniversary, and that celebrations will take place over the course of the next year. On a post on Capcom Unity, he stated “I don’t know that there’s more substantial [things] for me to talk about but there’s a TON more things we have in the works, only some of which will be shared on December 17th.”

At this stage, the only other known Mega Man anniversary plans are the Virtual Console releases of Mega Man and Mega Man 2 for the 3DS in Europe in Q1 2013. Get to it, Capcom!

The NES version of Bionic Commando is best remembered for being completely different (and superior) to the arcade original thanks to its tightly designed action, superior swing mechanics and more interesting level design.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Street Fighter II: Turbo

by on Oct.17, 2012, under Video Game Ad of the Day

Christmas 1993 played host to what I call the Battle of Street Fighter II, with just about every system in the console war boasting some kind of version of the game. Street Fighter II Turbo was the second version of the game available for the Super Nintendo, and arguably the best of the three that were eventually released. It probably didn’t have the same level of impact when compared to Special Championship Edition on the Mega Drive due to the earlier release of The World Warrior, but it’s still a damn fine game.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Devil May Cry

by on Oct.09, 2012, under Video Game Ad of the Day

Devil May Cry‘s brand of stylish action took many of us by storm when it first launched in late 2001. It originally started development as Resident Evil 4, but the direction the game took proved to be too much of a departure from the survival horror roots of the Resident Evil series (despite the final RE4 being a massive change of direction). We recommend avoiding the PAL version, unless you want a sandwiched picture that runs bog slow compared to the real thing.

Mega Man X is set 100 years after the end of the classic Mega Man series, and focuses largely on the conflict caused by Mavericks (or Irregulars for the fans of the Japanese series), robots who feel that their kind is superior to humanity and wish to take over the world. You play as X, the original reploid created by Dr. Light and locked away for a century, who is tasked with the job of hunting down Sigma, X’s former Maverick Hunter commander who has joined forces with the Mavericks.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Street Fighter Alpha 2

Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the SNES? It happened, thanks to custom hardware (the S-DD1 chip) which allowed on the fly decompression of sprites and some trickery with the way the game handles sound.

Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Chess set coming soon

by on Aug.02, 2012, under News

The Street Fighter series turns 25 this month, and Capcom has a whole lot of merch and such ready for your consumption.

One of the cooler pieces being released for the occasion is this Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Chess set, which is available through Capcom’s store for $US299.95.

Each set is individually numbered (there are 5,000 sets being made), and encompasses highly-detailed silver and pewter-colored resin pieces (each of which fits into a protective custom slow when not displayed, a large 18″x18″ smoked and sandblasted glass game board, a high-quality black wood storage case with polished chrome latch and hinges and a large Street Fighter® 25th Anniversary logo laser-etched into the lid and a certificate of authenticity.

The roster includes Ryu & M. Bison (kings), Chun-Li & Juri (queens), Ken, Guile, Balrog & Vega (bishops), E. Honda, Blanka, Rolento & Akuma (knights), Dhalsim, Zangief, Sagat & Seth (rooks), Ryu’s fist & Shadaloo winged skull (pawns).

Haunting Ground coming to PS2 Classics?

by on Jul.29, 2012, under News

The ESRB has rated Haunting Ground, a PS2 survival horror game from Capcom, for the Playstation 3 – suggesting a PSN re-release is happening.

In Haunting Ground, players assume the role of Fiona in her attempt to escape a castle inhabited by some pretty creepy people intent on chasing and attacking the young lady. Your time in the castle is spent solving puzzles, evading and hiding from pursuers and generally running about in fear – being fearful for long enough triggers Panic Mode where players must endure a blurry screen and other unsettling visual effects along with controller vibrations in time with Fiona’s heartbeat. You do have Hewie though; a white German Sheppard that Fiona befriends and can command to help you out with a bit of growling, barking, biting, and such.

Hopefully, PAL regions will also see Haunting Ground as a PS2 Classic in the near future.
