Soulcalibur II HD Online launches on November 20

by on Nov.02, 2013, under News

Namco Bandai has announced on Twitter that Soulcalibur II HD Online will be headed to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade on November 20. The game promises a tarted up version of one of the most popular fighting games of the PS2/Xbox/GameCube era, with online support and the first opportunity to fight guest characters Heihachi and Spawn against each other.

The price is set at $US20, €19 and about £15. No local price has been set, but it’s safe to assume that it’ll probably be $AU30.

With the high price and poor timing (the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 launching either side of the game locally and in most Western territories) of the release, one has to wonder how much faith Namco has in the release. Perhaps a WiiU eShop release with Link would have drummed up some more interest.

Double Dragon Trilogy heading to iOS and Android

by on Nov.02, 2013, under News

DotEmu will be releasing Double Dragon Trilogy onto the App Store and Google Play Store before the end of the year. It’s exactly what it says on the tin – an app encompassing mobile ports of the arcade versions of Double Dragon, Double Dragon II: The Revenge and Double Dragon III: The Rosetta Stone.

Of course, a couple of enhancements have been made in the process, such as selectable difficulty levels – including one that’s a little more mobile friendly, achievements and leaderboards, a remastered soundtrack (as well as the original) and support for most iOS and Android game pads.

Personally, I still think the NES version of Double Dragon II is the best in the series.

Blizzard releases Blackthorne for free through Battle.net

by on Nov.02, 2013, under News

blackthorne
Before Warcraft and Diablo were their bread and butter, Blizzard released a number of popular original titles for consoles and PCs. One such game was Blackthorne, an action/adventure game where you played as a warrior looking for revenge on a race of aliens.

Completely out of the blue today, Blizzard has added Blackthorne to Battle.net for download absolutely free. It’s updated to run on modern versions of Windows, but other than that, it maintains its original form. It’s based on the DOS version with the nice pixel art, not the 32X one with the weird pre-rendered look.

It’ll be interesting to see if Blizzard’s other popular mid 90s games such as The Lost Vikings appear soon.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Mega Man 8

by on Oct.29, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day

Mega Man 8
Mega Man 8 is one of the more overlooked entries in the classic Mega Man series, probably due to the focus being on the X series at the time, being a 2D game in a 3D era, and having a pretty ghastly English dub. It has beautiful sprite work, though.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?

Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego
The criminal mastermind Carmen Sandiego is on the loose again, presumably with some form of time machine. As a result, you get to spend the next couple of hours doing history homework in order to catch her.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Advance)

by on Oct.22, 2013, under Video Game Ad of the Day

Donkey Kong Country GBA
Nintendo effectively turned the Game Boy Advance into a SNES port dumping ground, but it’s safe to say that many of the ports were actually worse than their original versions. Probably the most offensive case was Donkey Kong Country, which was significantly brightened up – to the point where it looks absolutely awful on anything but the original, non-lit GBA console.
