Never played the suikodens, were they any good?

Yes they were, Emperor Nuss. I was told that the first one was a drag, but I powered through it with ease. The second one is the pinnacle; excellent cast of characters, thrilling storyline, and the music is top notch. Things make a lot more sense if you play 1 & 2 together.
I never finished 3, 4, or 5 – though despite 4 getting a lot of hate I enjoyed my time with it.
