Video Game Ad of the Day: 32X

by on Sep.04, 2011, under Video Game Ad of the Day

Uh, yeah.

The Sega 32X was an add-on designed for the Mega Drive with the intention of creating a stop-gap 32-bit gaming solution for those budget minded consumers that were not ready to step up to the Saturn, which was due for release the following year. Not such a great idea in hindsight. Overall, just 34 games were released for the troubled system, along with 6 games which used the Mega CD and 32X in tandem.

Well, Sorcerer’s Stone in this case…

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (or Sorcerer’s Stone for our American visitors) was the first of seven books in the Harry Potter series. Electronic Arts snapped up the rights to make games on the series when the film rights were licensed, and farmed them out to a variety of developers. The result was four different games on four different platforms, and I’m not all that certain that any of them are good.

Ask a stupid question…

Battlezone was a popular vector-based arcade game released by Atari in 1980. Atari brought the game to a variety of home console and computer game formats, but had to redesign the game with raster graphics in mind. This ad is for that particular version.

Video Game Ad of the Day: The Death and Return of Superman

Blizzard didn’t always have the Midas touch.

The Death and Return of Superman follows the major comic book arc of the early 1990s where Superman dies after a brutal fight with Doomsday. Players get to control Superman and his four imposters – The Cyborg, Superboy, Steel and The Eradicator. The PAL Mega Drive version is worth quite a bit of scratch, so keep your eyes peeled for it.

Who doesn’t love a compilation?

Arcade’s Greatest Hits was a mid 1990s compilation featuring several of Midway’s early 1980s successes like Defender, Joust and Sinistar. I have to admit to enjoying this particular version of Defender, since the Mega Drive pad makes it so much easier. This ad is for the UK 16-bit versions.

I spent way too much time in this game with little clue as to what I was doing. Turns out you can beat it in under 10 minutes.

The Rescue of Princess Blobette is the second game in the Boy and His Blob series, and the final one developed by Absolute Entertainment. The series would be reimagined many years later on the Wii by WayForward Technologies.

Video Game Ad of the Day: Socks the Cat Rocks the Hill

Not the type of pussy we tend to associate with the Clinton administration.

Socks the Cat Rocks the Hill was an ultimately unreleased video game starring Socks, the Clinton family cat. Someone actually greenlit this project, believing it to be a good idea, and it got very far into development before being cancelled. Ah, corporate stupidity.
