King of Kong remake is still on like Donkey Kong

by on Jul.12, 2011, under News

You should all have watched King of Kong by now. It was a 2007 documentary about the battle between Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell for the world record high score in Donkey Kong. Director Seth Gordon ended up hitting the big time after the film, breaking into directing film and television, including new release film Horrible Bosses.

Now that that’s all wrapped up, he’s talking about the King of Kong remake, which has the backing of New Line Cinema.

Speaking with the Playlist, Gordon confirmed that the remake is still in production, and that they have a new script, courtesy of Melissa Stack. He also confirmed that he has drawn some inspiration from his work on Modern Family and The Office (US) in planning the new film. “There’s a few different avenues [the film can take]. I’ve done some work on Modern Family and The Office and have worked in this doc style, and so that inspired me to say, instead of doing a traditional narrative feature script, what if we did the remake in the doc style?,” he explained. “What doors what that open? What opportunities? What additional story could we tell? And that’s essentially the approach we took.”

Before he gets back to the world of arcade grudge matches, Gordon will be directing a remake of Wargames.
