Aussie Oddities: Super Mario 3-Dees Jellies

by on May.24, 2011, under Aussie Oddities

I was doing a spot of grocery shopping at the local large supermarket chain, and spotted something rather peculiar in the same aisle as the school lunch stuff (muesli bars and the like).

Nintendo licensed food in Australia? What is this witchcraft?

I’ve always been a tad skeptical of “natural jellies” in the school food aisle, since historically, they’re typically one or two steps removed from glucose loaded candy (which is why I had a fondness for them, particularly the Rugrats ones). These are manufactured in China by a company named Au’some, and imported into Australia by Candy Brokers.

Anyway, let’s open the box.

It’s like a matryoshka doll.

And here they are, in all their gelatinous glory. Be careful, they leave a slight residue on your fingers. Let’s go in for a closer look.

That sort of looks like Yoshi, no?

Well, it did until he was eaten. Tastes like a bit like a jelly cup.

Super Mario 3-Dees Jellies come sculputered in Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong forms, and are available in two different packaged varities – Apple & Strawberry as featured here, and Orange and Blueberry, which is advertised on the box, but yet to be seen out in the wild.

…it’s been nearly a week since you (presumably) ate these – how are you feeling? Have you gone blind? Should I start looking for them in my local supermarket?

Sickness experienced in recent times is unrelated to the jellies. Eyesight is normal. Probably worth trying them out as a curiosity, wouldn’t make them a regular purchase – just my personal preference, though. I’ve only seen them at Woolworths/Safeway, so best to start there.
